What is TRON?

According to its own documentation, TRON is a decentralised, open-source blockchain platform, with TRX as its native coin. TRON DAO calls it a network for stablecoins, payments and apps. TRON DAO was founded in Singapore in July 2017; the MiCA whitepaper for TRX names Justin Sun as the founder of TRON. The mainnet went live in May 2018, and its own genesis block followed in June 2018.

TRON runs on delegated proof-of-stake (DPoS). Anyone who locks up TRX gets voting rights, called TRON Power, and uses them to vote for Super Representatives. The 27 with the most votes produce the blocks and decide on proposals to change the network. A new block is added roughly every 3 seconds. Smart contracts run in the TRON Virtual Machine (TVM), which largely works like Ethereum's.

TRX started out as a token on Ethereum, with 100 billion coins. When its own network went live, TRX became that network's coin. There is no fixed maximum: with every new block, the protocol creates TRX as a reward for the Super Representatives and those who voted for them. At the same time, the TRX used to pay transaction fees is burned. Whether the supply grows or shrinks depends on which of the two outweighs the other.

TRON uses two resources: bandwidth for the size of a transaction and energy for executing smart contracts. Anyone who locks up TRX (staking) receives bandwidth or energy, along with voting rights. Every activated account also receives a fixed amount of free bandwidth, which replenishes within 24 hours. If there is not enough, TRX is burned to pay the fees.

Questions about this price

Where does the TRON price come from?

From CoinGecko, which averages the price across the trading venues where TRON is traded. Our database fetches that price every ten minutes; the time is shown next to the price.

Why is the price different from the one at my exchange?

This is a mid-market price. An exchange sets its own buying and selling prices, with spread and fees. That means you pay more when you buy and get less when you sell.

What does the chart show?

The closing price of each past week in euros, as Kraken publishes it openly, since 2020. It contains no forecast, only what has already happened.
