What is Cardano?
Cardano is a public blockchain that runs on proof-of-stake. Charles Hoskinson and Jeremy Wood started work on it in 2015. The mainnet went live on 23 September 2017, together with the ada coin.
Since its launch, Cardano has used Ouroboros, a proof-of-stake protocol, and it has never had mining. Blocks are produced by stake pools, selected in proportion to the ada delegated to them. Anyone who delegates ada keeps it in their own wallet. A new block is added roughly every 20 seconds.
According to Cardano's constitution, there will never be more than 45 billion ada. New ada comes only from a fixed reserve, as a reward for staking and as funding for the network's treasury.
You use ada to pay transaction fees, for staking, to vote on the governance of the network and to pay for services in apps on Cardano.

Questions about this price
Where does the Cardano price come from?
From CoinGecko, which averages the price across the trading venues where Cardano is traded. Our database fetches that price every ten minutes; the time is shown next to the price.
Why is the price different from the one at my exchange?
