What is Litecoin?
Litecoin describes itself as digital money for instant payments worldwide, at almost no cost. According to the Litecoin Core source code, the first block dates from 7 October 2011.
Litecoin runs on proof-of-work, with the Scrypt algorithm instead of bitcoin's SHA-256. On average, a new block is added every 2.5 minutes.
The reward per block started at 50 LTC and halves every 840,000 blocks.
Litecoin is intended for payments. Dogecoin uses the same Scrypt algorithm and can therefore be mined together with Litecoin (merged mining).
