What is Chainlink?
Chainlink is an oracle platform: a network that brings data from outside a blockchain to smart contracts. Sergey Nazarov and Steve Ellis founded it in September 2017, when the whitepaper was published, with Ari Juels as co-author. The network went live on Ethereum in May 2019.
Chainlink is not a blockchain itself. Several independent oracle nodes update each data feed: they exchange their signed observations and together send a single aggregated transaction to the chain. LINK is an ERC-677 token, originally issued on Ethereum.
The total supply is capped at 1 billion LINK.
LINK is the unit of payment for Chainlink services and the fee for those who run the nodes. Since December 2022 you can also lock up LINK (staking); if a node performs poorly, part of the staked LINK can be taken away.

Questions about this price
Where does the Chainlink price come from?
From CoinGecko, which averages the price across the trading venues where Chainlink is traded. Our database fetches that price every ten minutes; the time is shown next to the price.
Why is the price different from the one at my exchange?
This is a mid-market price. An exchange sets its own buying and selling prices, with spread and fees. That means you pay more when you buy and get less when you sell.
What does the chart show?
The closing price of each past week in euros, as Kraken publishes it openly, since 2019. It contains no forecast, only what has already happened.
