Crypto prop trading: what you must hit and what you can lose

You pay for an evaluation, trade in a simulated environment and only get capital once you hit a profit target without breaching a loss limit. Here are Kraken Prop's rules in plain words, and a calculator that shows how narrow that playing field is.

How an evaluation works

  1. 1

    You buy an evaluation

One fee per attempt. You pick a plan and an account size; you do not deposit any trading money of your own.

  2. 2

    You hit the profit target

In a simulated environment, with no time limit. Breach the daily or the overall limit and the attempt is over, along with the fee.

  3. 3

    You get a funded account

After verification and a review, up to 200,000 dollars. From then on, losses are not yours to carry.

  4. 4

You keep part of the profit

80%, or 90% if you pay a 20% surcharge when you buy. Payouts go to your Kraken account, usually within 24 hours according to Kraken.

The rules in plain words

Profit target

How much your account must grow to pass: 10% on Starter, 12% on Intermediate, 9% on Advanced.

Daily loss

Every day at 00:30 UTC Kraken records your balance. Fall more than 3% below it that day and you are out.

Maximum loss

Measured from your starting balance: 6% on Starter, 5% on Intermediate, 3% on Advanced. The limit does not move up when you make a profit.

What there is not

No time limit and no consistency rule: you may hit the target in one good day.

Work it out

What Kraken itself says

  • Kraken itself calls Kraken Prop an unregulated service. It is not a crypto-asset service under the EU's MiCA rules.
  • According to Kraken, most candidates do not pass on their first attempt.
  • You do not get the evaluation fee back once you start trading, whatever the outcome.
  • The evaluation is provided by Breakout Trading Group, LLC; the funded account by Payward Oceanic Ltd in the British Virgin Islands.
  • Regulators are watching: in January 2026 the Dutch AFM warned about a funded-trading platform that, according to the AFM, provided investment services without authorisation. That concerned CFDs, not Kraken Prop.

Questions

What is prop trading?

You trade with a company's money instead of your own. First you prove in a paid evaluation that you can make a profit within the rules; after that you share the profit with that company.

Do you trade with real money?

Not during the evaluation: that is a simulated environment. After passing you trade with capital from Payward Oceanic Ltd. Losses are then not yours to carry; the evaluation fee is gone either way.

Do I get the evaluation fee back?

No. According to Kraken, the fee for an attempt is not refunded once you start trading, even if you pass.

What happens if I breach the daily or overall limit?

Then the evaluation is over. A new attempt is a new purchase; the code CRYPTOCODES works then too.

Is the 90% profit share worth the surcharge?

Only if you expect a solid profit. You only earn back the 20% surcharge once your profit on the funded account is more than about twice the evaluation fee.
