What is Bitcoin?

According to its own website, Bitcoin is a network that enables a new payment system and completely digital money. Its creator goes by the name Satoshi Nakamoto and wrote the whitepaper Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System. The first block, the genesis block, dates from January 2009.

A transaction is confirmed once it is included in a block, together with a mathematical proof of work: proof-of-work. The computers that do this work are called miners. On average, a new block is added roughly every ten minutes.

There will never be more than 21 million bitcoins. The reward per block started at 50 bitcoin and halves every 210,000 blocks, roughly once every four years.

Bitcoin is designed to send money directly from one person to another, without a bank or other financial institution in between. The website itself compares it to cash for the internet.

From CoinGecko, which averages the price across the trading venues where Bitcoin is traded. Our database fetches that price every ten minutes; the time is shown next to the price.

Why is the price different from the one at my exchange?
