The story

BitBox started in Switzerland in 2015 with the Digital BitBox, built by Douglas Bakkum and Jonas Schnelli; the company behind it, Shift Crypto AG, is based in Adliswil near Zurich. The BitBox02 followed in 2019 and the BitBox02 Nova in June 2025, with a glass display, an EAL6+ certified secure chip from Infineon and, for the first time, support for iPhone and iPad. Both models come in a Multi edition (bitcoin, ether with ERC20 tokens, Cardano and Litecoin) and a Bitcoin-only edition with deliberately limited firmware. The firmware is fully open source, the hardware is designed and made in Switzerland, and the web shop covers import costs. If you mainly hold bitcoin and want to be able to check what your wallet does, this is a good fit.

Where it falls short

  • A hardware wallet costs money while a software wallet is free (BitBox02 €169, Nova €199).
  • A deliberately shorter coin list than the big competitors: bitcoin, ether with ERC20 tokens, Cardano and Litecoin. If you use many other networks, you will probably miss one.
