Which wallet suits you?

Answer four questions and you'll get a short list, with why each wallet fits and what to watch out for. We checked every feature on the makers' own websites. Anything we couldn't find there is listed as not confirmed.

  5. Exodus

    App

Runs on: iOS · Android · Windows · macOS · Linux

    Watch out for

    • An app keeps your keys on a device connected to the internet. For an amount you'd really miss, a hardware wallet is a better fit.

How the list is put together

  • We checked 19 wallets against the makers' own information: their shops, help centres and documentation. Comparison sites and reviews don't count.
  • Anything that definitely doesn't fit drops out: a wallet that doesn't support your coin or your device. Anything we couldn't confirm stays in, with a note saying it isn't confirmed.
  • After that, every answer counts. For an amount you'd really miss, a hardware wallet comes first. For each item you tick under ‘What matters to you?’, what counts is whether the wallet can do it. If there's a tie, the wallet with the fewest points under ‘Watch out for’ comes first; after that, alphabetical order decides.
  • Partners in this list: BitBox, Blockstream, and Ledger. If you buy through us, we earn a commission. That plays no part at all in the ranking: the calculation doesn't look at who is a partner.
  • Prices are deliberately left out: they change often and differ from shop to shop.
  • This is a tool, not advice. Read the maker's manual before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a hardware wallet?

Not if it's a small amount, or if you leave your crypto on a platform. If you want to manage your keys yourself and it's an amount you'd really miss, a hardware wallet is the usual choice: that way your keys don't end up on a device connected to the internet.

Why isn't my wallet on the list?

We checked a limited list: well-known hardware wallets on sale in Europe and widely used apps. If a wallet isn't on it, that says nothing about its quality.

What does ‘not confirmed’ mean?

That we couldn't find that feature on the maker's website. It may well be true, but we only add it once the maker says so itself.

Does a partnership affect the ranking?

No. The ranking doesn't look at who is a partner. That's only shown as a label, so you know where we earn a commission.

What's the difference between open source and partly open source?

With open source, all of the wallet's code is public, so researchers can review it. With partly open source, part of it is public, the app for example, but not the software on the secure chip.
