What is Solana?
Solana describes itself as a high-speed network for fast, secure and affordable digital transactions. According to the Solana Foundation's annual review, the network launched in March 2020 as Mainnet Beta.
Solana runs on proof-of-stake: anyone who stakes SOL helps secure the network. It also uses proof of history, a sequence of proofs that records that a certain amount of time passed between two moments. In this way, it works like a shared clock. The consensus itself is called Tower BFT.
Solana does not state a maximum supply, but it does have an inflation schedule: it started at 8% a year, falls by 15% each year and ends at a fixed 1.5% a year.
You use SOL to pay transaction fees and to help secure the network through staking. The base fee is 5,000 lamports per signature, half of which is burned; one lamport is 0.000000001 SOL. On Solana, smart contracts are called programs.
