What is XRP?

XRP is the native coin of the XRP Ledger, a decentralised blockchain for financial transactions. David Schwartz, Jed McCaleb and Arthur Britto started work on it in 2011; the XRP Ledger went live in June 2012.

The XRP Ledger has no mining. Transactions are confirmed using its own protocol, the XRP Ledger Consensus Protocol, in which servers use a list of trusted validators to reach agreement. According to xrpl.org, a transaction is settled in 3 to 5 seconds.

The supply is fixed: all XRP already exists, and there can never be more than the original 100 billion. Of those 100 billion, the founders gave 80 billion to the company behind it. With every transaction, a small fee in XRP is destroyed; it goes to no one.

XRP is built for payments: as a bridge currency for faster and cheaper payments between countries, and for small payments.

Questions about this price

Where does the XRP price come from?

From CoinGecko, which averages the price across the trading venues where XRP is traded. Our database fetches that price every ten minutes; the time is shown next to the price.

Why is the price different from the one at my exchange?

This is a mid-market price. An exchange sets its own buying and selling prices, with spread and fees. That means you pay more when you buy and get less when you sell.

What does the chart show?

The closing price of each past week in euros, as Kraken publishes it openly, since 2017. It contains no forecast, only what has already happened.
