What is Ethereum?
Ethereum is a decentralised blockchain network and software platform, with ether (ETH) as its native coin. Vitalik Buterin described the idea in a whitepaper in 2013. The network went live on 30 July 2015, with the Frontier release.
Until September 2022, Ethereum ran on proof-of-work. On 15 September 2022 it switched to proof-of-stake; that switch is known as The Merge. Since then, validators have locked up ether in a smart contract; anyone running their own validator puts in 32 ETH. According to ethereum.org, the network has used roughly 99.95% less energy since The Merge.
Ether has no fixed maximum like bitcoin's 21 million; the supply changes over time. Validators receive new ether as a reward, and since the London upgrade of August 2021, part of every transaction fee has been burned.
You use ether to pay transaction fees (gas) on the network and for staking. With smart contracts, anyone can create their own digital assets and apps (dapps) that run day and night.
