What is Dogecoin?
Dogecoin is an open-source digital currency that goes directly from person to person. Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer came up with it in late 2013 as a joke, named after the well-known Doge meme. Dogecoin launched on 6 December 2013.
Dogecoin runs on proof-of-work and, like Litecoin, uses the Scrypt algorithm. Thanks to merged mining, work a miner does for Litecoin also counts as proof for a Dogecoin block. A new block of at most 1 MB is added every minute.
There is no maximum. Every block produces 10,000 new DOGE, 5 billion a year in total. Because that amount is fixed, the inflation rate falls every year. According to dogecoin.com, a cap would actually make the network insecure.
Dogecoin has always been intended as a means of payment: for purchases and for tips on social media, with very low fees per transaction.

From CoinGecko, which averages the price across the trading venues where Dogecoin is traded. Our database fetches that price every ten minutes; the time is shown next to the price.
