What is Polkadot?
Polkadot describes itself as a decentralised multi-core cloud computer, built on a blockchain. Its creator is Gavin Wood. The first block was produced on 26 May 2020; since 18 June 2020, the network has run on proof-of-stake.
Polkadot uses Nominated Proof-of-Stake (NPoS): DOT holders nominate the validators that secure the network. Blocks are produced with BABE, in slots of about 6 seconds, and finalised with GRANDPA.
There are now about 1.6 billion DOT; the maximum is 2.1 billion. That cap was introduced with referendum 1710, implemented in January 2026. On 21 August 2020, DOT was split into smaller units: one old DOT became 100 new ones.
You use DOT to vote on the governance of the network, for staking and to buy coretime: computing time on the network.

Questions about this price
Where does the Polkadot price come from?
From CoinGecko, which averages the price across the trading venues where Polkadot is traded. Our database fetches that price every ten minutes; the time is shown next to the price.
Why is the price different from the one at my exchange?
This is a mid-market price. An exchange sets its own buying and selling prices, with spread and fees. That means you pay more when you buy and get less when you sell.
What does the chart show?
The closing price of each past week in euros, as Kraken publishes it openly, since 2020. It contains no forecast, only what has already happened.
