What is Avalanche?

Avalanche is a network of blockchains on which assets are issued and transactions are settled in seconds, with AVAX as its native coin. Ava Labs was founded in 2018; the mainnet launched in September 2020.

The network runs on proof-of-stake: validators lock up AVAX, and the more AVAX they lock up, the more often other nodes consult them. The consensus is called Snowman: repeated rounds of voting, each time among a small, random group of validators. You can become a validator from 2,000 AVAX. The primary network runs three chains: the X-Chain, the P-Chain and the C-Chain, which works with the Ethereum Virtual Machine.

There will never be more than 720 million AVAX. At launch, 360 million were created; validators receive new AVAX as a reward, and transaction fees are burned.

You use AVAX to pay fees, to secure the network through staking and to settle between the various Avalanche L1 chains.

Questions about this price

Where does the Avalanche price come from?

From CoinGecko, which averages the price across the trading venues where Avalanche is traded. Our database fetches that price every ten minutes; the time is shown next to the price.

Why is the price different from the one at my exchange?

This is a mid-market price. An exchange sets its own buying and selling prices, with spread and fees. That means you pay more when you buy and get less when you sell.

What does the chart show?

The closing price of each past week in euros, as Kraken publishes it openly, since 2021. It contains no forecast, only what has already happened.
