What is Shiba Inu?
Shiba Inu (SHIB) is a memecoin. According to shib.io, SHIB was launched on the Ethereum blockchain in 2020, as a token driven by its community. The ShibPaper, the project's charter, was written by Shytoshi Kusama in 2023.
SHIB is a token based on the ERC-20 standard on Ethereum. According to shib.io, SHIB now also exists on Shibarium and on 12 other chains. Shibarium is the project's own network on top of Ethereum (known as a layer 2), set up by Shib.io for low fees and fast transactions. Transaction fees on Shibarium are not paid in SHIB but in BONE, another of the project's tokens.
shib.io describes SHIB as deflationary: the supply decreases because SHIB is burned, including through transactions. According to the ShibPaper, this does not make the value rise, but it does mean there is less SHIB in circulation.
shib.io says you can pay with SHIB in hundreds of places, either directly or through an intermediary, and that the project has its own payment system on the blockchain: SHIB Pay. You also use SHIB in the ecosystem's financial apps (DeFi) and to vote in the SHIB DAO, the body that governs the project. The ShibPaper states that a single SHIB is enough to vote.
