What is Kaspa?
Kaspa describes itself as a proof-of-work network in the form of a blockDAG. It grew out of research into blockDAGs at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and later at Harvard. The mainnet went live in November 2021 as a fair launch: without a premine, without coins for insiders and without a presale. According to kaspa.org, every coin in existence today was mined in the open, starting from the first block.
According to the paper PHANTOM and GHOSTDAG by Yonatan Sompolinsky, Shai Wyborski and Aviv Zohar, bitcoin deliberately keeps its pace slow, so that each block has spread across the entire network before the next one arrives. Kaspa does not discard blocks created at the same time, but puts them in order with GHOSTDAG, the protocol from that paper. A block can refer to several earlier blocks; together they form a blockDAG instead of a single chain. Since the Crescendo hard fork of 5 May 2025, the network has added 10 blocks per second, up from 1 before. Miners perform proof-of-work; in the source code, the hash function used for this is called KHeavyHash.
The reward for miners follows a fixed schedule. After an initial phase of six months, it halves every year, but in small steps: each month it goes down a little, until it reaches zero. With the switch to 10 blocks per second, issuance per second stayed the same; since then, the reward per block has been divided by the number of blocks per second. One KAS is 100,000,000 sompi.
kaspa.org describes Kaspa as bitcoin's proof-of-work, but without the wait: a transaction that is safely confirmed after an hour on bitcoin is confirmed within seconds on Kaspa. You also use KAS to pay transaction fees, which go to the miners. The Toccata hard fork arrived on 30 June 2026, adding covenants: spending rules that set out who may spend coins and how. According to kaspa.org, this opens the way to vaults, smart wallets and native tokens on Kaspa, among other things.
