Umbrel Pro vs Umbrel Home: 8 cores, 32 TB, FailSafe
Umbrel Pro has eight cores, 16 GB RAM and four M.2 slots up to 32 TB; Umbrel Home four cores and 4 TB. For a node alone, a Raspberry Pi is enough.
Umbrel Pro is a home server with eight cores, 16 GB of memory and four M.2 slots holding up to 32 TB of SSD storage between them. Umbrel Home, the model that was already there, has four cores and a maximum of 4 TB. Both run the same umbrelOS, and therefore the same Bitcoin node with the same apps.
Anyone who only wants to run that node needs neither of them. More on that below.
In short
8-core Intel Core i3-N300 at 3.8 GHz · 16 GB LPDDR5 · four M.2 2280 NVMe slots up to 32 TB · 2.5 Gbps Ethernet · FailSafe on RAID · the same umbrelOS as Umbrel Home.
What is inside
From the product page, read on 15 August 2026:
- Processor: Intel Core i3-N300, eight cores, 3.8 GHz.
- Memory: 16 GB LPDDR5.
- Storage: four M.2 2280 NVMe slots, each taking an SSD of up to 8 TB, so 32 TB in total. Plus 64 GB onboard for umbrelOS itself.
- Networking: one 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port.
- Ports: two USB 3.2 Gen 2 and HDMI 2.1.
Some third-party product listings still give 16 TB as the maximum. Umbrel itself states 32 TB, across four slots for SSDs of up to 8 TB each.
The difference from Umbrel Home
Twice the cores, eight times the storage, two and a half times the network. What stays identical is the software: umbrelOS runs on both, so the Pro gives you no app and no feature that the Home lacks.
FailSafe costs storage capacity
FailSafe is RAID under another name. Umbrel describes it as "Even if any one SSD fails, your data doesn''t" — if one drive dies, the system shifts to the next without interruption.
That only works with more than one SSD, and the capacity that goes into the redundancy is capacity you cannot use. Four slots totalling 32 TB is therefore not 32 TB of usable space once FailSafe is on. Exactly how much remains depends on the RAID level per configuration, and Umbrel does not publish that.
The price
On the product page on 15 August 2026, the price showed only "From"; the figure depends on the storage you pick and appears at the order step. Umbrel''s own announcement gave 699 US dollars, €599 or £529 as the starting price, and individual third-party listings quote the same 699 US dollars. We could not read it off the store page itself. Treat it as an indication, not as the amount you will be charged.
We have Umbrel Home listed from 549 US dollars. The gap between those two figures is the entry point, not the final bill: with the Pro you usually buy the SSDs on top.
Umbrel states free delivery within the United States. For Europe, shipping costs and import duties may apply. What those come to is not stated.
When this machine is too much
umbrelOS is free and open source. You are paying for hardware only, which is exactly why the sum has to be honest.
If you run a Bitcoin node and nothing else, this machine is overspecified. A Raspberry Pi with an external SSD has done that job for years, for roughly a tenth of the money. The blockchain fits on it comfortably and a node does not need eight cores; it verifies blocks, and that is all. umbrelOS runs on that Pi too.
The Pro starts to earn its keep the moment more has to sit on it: household file storage alongside the node, media, an ad blocker for your whole network, and then the redundancy so that a dead SSD does not cost you a weekend. Spend a thousand euros on something a hundred and fifty would have covered and you do not have a better node — just a more expensive one.
Why running your own node makes sense at all is covered in why more and more people run their own Bitcoin node at home. What we have verified at this moment is on our offer page.
What we could not verify
- The current price on the store page. It shows only "From"; the figure of 699 US dollars comes from Umbrel''s own announcement and from third-party listings, not from the store itself.
- What shipping to Europe and any import duties cost.
- How much storage remains usable with FailSafe on. Umbrel names no RAID level per configuration.
- The delivery time to the Netherlands and Belgium.
