Why more people run their own Bitcoin node at home
With MiCA fully in force today and exchanges facing tighter regulation, interest in self-custody is growing fast. Non-custodial swap volumes rose over 340% this year. Here's why running your own node makes sense, and how to do it simply at home — for example with Umbrel.
As MiCA fully takes effect from 1 July and exchanges face tighter regulation, interest in self-custody is growing fast. Non-custodial swap volumes rose globally by more than 340% year-over-year, and the hardware wallet market is growing at roughly 25% annually.
In short
📈 Non-custodial volumes +340% year-over-year · 🔐 MiCA does not apply to self-custody wallets you control yourself · 🌍 Europe holds a 28-30% share, the second-largest market for hardware wallets · 🏠 running your own Bitcoin node at home doesn't have to be technical.
Why run your own node?
A Bitcoin node independently verifies all transactions and blocks, instead of trusting a third party's node (like an exchange or wallet provider). This means:
- ‘Don't trust, verify’ — you check the network's rules yourself, instead of trusting someone else got it right.
- Privacy. Your wallet queries balances and transactions directly from your own node, not an external server that could be watching.
- Independence from licensing status. Whether an exchange complies with MiCA or not is irrelevant to holdings you manage yourself.
How do you do this at home, without technical knowledge?
This used to require a DIY Raspberry Pi setup and some tinkering skills. Today it can be plug-and-play. Umbrel Home is a ready-made home server device on which you can run a full Bitcoin node, Lightning node and dozens of other self-hosted apps with one click — no command line needed.
- Connect the device to your router (ethernet cable) and power.
- Go to
umbrel.localin your browser — no separate monitor or keyboard needed. - Install the Bitcoin Node app with one click and connect your wallet to it.

Want more than a node alone — household file storage, media, redundancy — then there is now a bigger model. The differences are in Umbrel Pro vs Umbrel Home.
Not just for Bitcoin
Besides a node, the same device lets you store your own files, photos and documents (instead of a cloud service), set up network-wide ad-blocking, or stream media to your TV — all under your own control.
