Telegram outage breaks t.me links: watch out for crypto phishing

Telegram's t.me domain entered serverHold status, breaking channel and bot links worldwide. For crypto users this is the moment to be extra alert for fake links.

Crypto communities worldwide noticed it immediately on Tuesday: links to Telegram channels and bots via the t.me domain stopped working. The domain entered a so-called serverHold status, meaning DNS requests no longer resolved and browsers showed errors. The Telegram app itself kept working normally — only the web links broke.

Why this hits crypto

Telegram is the communication backbone of the crypto world: exchanges, projects, trading groups and support channels run on it en masse. Broken t.me links mean invite links on websites, in bios and in older messages lead nowhere.

And that is exactly where the risk sits. Outages are gold for scammers: expect fake ‘alternative links’, bogus support accounts and phishing sites posing as the ‘new’ address of well-known channels in the coming days.

How to stay safe

  1. Use the app, not the web links. Everything works normally inside the Telegram app; find channels via search instead of external links.
  2. Don't trust ‘new’ links from DMs. Legitimate exchanges never send you an unsolicited new channel link or support contact.
  3. Always verify the official domain. You'll find your exchange's real channels via its official website — never via a forwarded message.
  4. Support questions? Only via the site. No legitimate party handles support through private messages on Telegram.

The structural problem

The outage underlines how dependent crypto is on centralised communication infrastructure. One domain status change broke millions of links worldwide.
