Crypto exchanges in the Netherlands: what to check in 2026

Since MiCA came fully into force, the exchange landscape in the Netherlands has become clearer. We explain what to look at before you open an account.

Why registration and a MiCA license are crucial

Every exchange that offers services to Dutch users must, under MiCA, hold a license or operate under transitional rules. A license is not a quality seal for returns, but it does say something about governance, capital and protection in case of bankruptcy.

Five criteria that really matter

1. Custody of funds

Are client funds kept separate from company assets? What happens if the exchange goes under? Read the user agreement before depositing large amounts.

2. Cost structure

Don't look only at the trading fee. Spreads, withdrawal costs and deposit methods often determine the real price. A ‘0% commission’ broker usually earns its margin in the spread.

3. Available coins and products

How many trading pairs are there, and can you settle in euros without converting first? Staking, savings and derivatives are extras to start with only once you understand what you are doing.

4. Security and user experience

Mandatory 2FA, a withdrawal whitelist, an anti-phishing code and biometrics on mobile are modern standards. A clean app outweighs a fraction of a percent difference in cost.

5. Taxes and export options

Can you easily download a transaction overview for your tax return? Does the exchange work with tools like Koinly or CoinTracking?

Three common pitfalls

  • Being lured with welcome bonuses that only work at high volumes.
  • Using a slick-looking app without checking who is behind the company.
  • Leaving large amounts on the exchange instead of moving them to your own wallet.

A practical order of steps

  1. Open accounts at no more than two exchanges, not five.
  2. Complete the KYC carefully with your real details.
  3. Test first with a small deposit and withdrawal.
  4. Move everything above your active trading balance to your own wallet.

Closing

The best exchange is the one you sleep soundly with, not the one with the trendiest tagline. Take the time to read the terms — an hour of reading can prevent years of regret.
