One whole bitcoin feels out of reach for most people in 2026, with the price around €57,500. But the ownership statistics tell a surprising story: anyone holding a serious amount of BTC already belongs to a small global minority.
The numbers (summer 2026)
- About 988,000 addresses hold at least 1 BTC — less than 0.2% of all bitcoin addresses.
- Adjusted for people with multiple addresses and large exchange wallets, analysts estimate that 850,000 to 950,000 individuals worldwide own a whole coin. Out of 8+ billion people: roughly 1 in 9,000.
- Among all crypto owners, a whole bitcoin even places you in the top ~0.1% according to several datasets.
- Concentration remains high: the largest 1% of addresses controls the lion's share of supply — though that includes exchanges and ETF custodians holding on behalf of millions of clients.
Important caveat: addresses are not people. One person can have ten addresses, and one exchange address represents millions of users. All figures are estimates — but the order of magnitude is consistent across sources.
The middle class is disappearing
The most striking trend of 2026: small wallets (<0.1 BTC) keep growing with new entrants, while the middle layer (0.1–1 BTC) and the ‘wholecoiners’ (1–10 BTC) are slowly shrinking. Ownership is shifting towards institutional players — ETFs, companies, custodians. In the first half of the year, over 26,000 ‘millionaire addresses’ also disappeared due to the price decline.
The implication is simple: as institutions absorb more supply, even a fraction of a bitcoin in self-custody becomes relatively scarcer.
So what is a realistic goal?
Forget the whole coin as a starting point. With 0.1 BTC (roughly €5,750) you are already far above what the vast majority will ever own. And whoever saves automatically (DCA) with €50–€100 per month builds up steadily without timing stress — start with your first €100 if need be.
