Buying your crypto is one thing; storing it safely is at least as important. The biggest losses don't come from price drops, but from hacked accounts and lost access. In 2026 it comes down to one question: do you leave your crypto on the exchange, or take self-custody with a hardware wallet?

In short

🏦 Exchange = handy for trading and small amounts · 🔐 Hardware wallet = you control your keys, offline and safe · 📏 rule of thumb: larger amount → self-custody · 🧠 ‘not your keys, not your coins’.

Leaving it on the exchange

The convenience of an exchange is real: you can trade instantly and install nothing. For smaller amounts or active trading that's fine — provided you enable two-factor authentication (2FA) and use a strong, unique password.

The downside: your funds sit on a platform you don't control yourself. So always pick a regulated, MiCA-focused party that keeps client funds segregated.

A hardware wallet: you hold the keys

A hardware wallet stores your private keys offline, on a physical device. Even if your computer is infected, your coins stay safe — you confirm transactions physically on the device. This is the gold standard for anyone holding serious amounts or long-term positions.

Ledger is one of the best-known brands: a proven device that truly brings your crypto into self-custody.

Most people combine: a small ‘working balance’ on a reliable exchange and the bulk safely offline in a hardware wallet.

Three rules you must never forget

  1. Never share your seed phrase — no one, no ‘support’ desk, legitimately asks for it.
  2. Enable 2FA on every exchange.
  3. Keep your recovery words offline, not as a screenshot or in the cloud.
