Save hundreds of euros in crypto fees (without the hassle)
Fees look small, but they eat your returns. Here's what you really pay per platform, where the hidden costs sit and how to save structurally in 5 minutes.
Buy €5,000 of crypto and you pay €7.50 at one platform and €40 at another — for exactly the same coins. The difference lies in fees and spread, and because those costs return with every purchase and sale, they add up to hundreds of euros over a few years. This article shows where the costs sit and how to lower them structurally.
The three cost items that determine your returns
1. Trading fees (maker/taker). Order-book platforms charge a percentage per transaction. The differences are big: Finst charges a flat 0.15%, OKX 0.20%/0.35% on a regular account (0.08%/0.10% applies only with an X-Perps account), Crypto.com 0.80% per purchase or exchange — up to 4% by card — and Kraken 0.40%/0.80% at the entry tier since July 2026.
2. The spread. Apps without an order book (like the Crypto.com app and Blox) build a markup into the price itself. You don't see it as a fee, but you do pay it — often 1% or more. For small, occasional purchases that convenience is fine; for larger amounts it gets expensive.
3. Deposit and withdrawal costs. SEPA deposits are free at virtually all European platforms. Card payments cost an extra 1.5–6% — so avoid them. For crypto withdrawals you pay the network fee.
Calculate it for your amount
We built a free fee calculator: enter your purchase amount and instantly see what you pay per platform, including what you save compared to the most expensive one. At €1,000 the difference between 0.15% and 0.80% is already €6.50 per purchase; at €5,000 it rises to €32.50 — per transaction.
Five saving rules that always work
- Deposit via SEPA, never by card. This alone saves 1.5–6%.
- Use limit orders where possible: the maker fee is almost always lower than the taker fee.
- Choose an order-book platform for larger amounts. The spread of instant-buy apps is the biggest hidden cost.
- Look at the fee structure, not at ‘0% commission’ marketing. Free doesn't exist; the costs then sit in the spread.
- Move long-term holdings to self-custody. That prevents repeated trading costs from unnecessary back-and-forth selling.
Which platform is the cheapest?
For European buyers, the most transparent low rates are currently at Finst (flat 0.15%, no spread, free SEPA/iDEAL) and OKX (0.20%/0.35%; 0.08%/0.10% only with an X-Perps account).
