Today, 1 July 2026, the transitional period of MiCA (Markets in Crypto-Assets, EU Regulation 2023/1114) officially ends. From now on, no provider may legally offer crypto services to clients in the European Union without a valid CASP licence (Crypto-Asset Service Provider).

In short

📅 The transitional period ends today across all 27 member states · 📉 an estimated more than 80% of previously nationally registered providers had not obtained full MiCA authorisation by late May · ✅ over 200 firms are fully certified · 🔎 check the ESMA register of authorised providers yourself.

What does this mean in practice?

If the platform holding your crypto doesn't have a MiCA licence, it may no longer onboard new EU clients from today and must eventually stop serving existing EU clients. Regulators like the AFM (Netherlands), FSMA (Belgium) and AMF (France) enforce this on ESMA's behalf.

What should you check now?

  1. Is your platform licensed? Look up the name in the public ESMA register of authorised CASPs.
  2. No licence? Move your holdings to a licensed platform, or to a self-custody wallet you control yourself (MiCA doesn't apply there).
  3. Do this calmly, but not too late. When transferring, always pick exactly the same network and send a small test transaction first.

Large, regulated exchanges such as OKX and Kraken are among the firms whose licensing process has been underway for some time.

Why these rules exist

MiCA aims to better protect investors: mandatory reserve transparency for stablecoin issuers, stricter custody requirements, and one harmonised supervisory framework instead of 27 different national regimes. For users, it mainly means more clarity about who is, and isn't, supervised.
