EU reviews MiCA: Commission gathers data for possible updates
The European Commission has started a review phase of the MiCA regulation. Possible updates are being prepared based on early practical experience.
MiCA under the microscope
After the first full rollout of MiCA (Markets in Crypto-Assets), the European Commission has begun a formal review phase. The goal: measure what works, what doesn't, and where adjustments are needed.
What is being examined?
- Stablecoin rules: are the reserve requirements proportionate?
- Licensing process: do CASPs (Crypto-Asset Service Providers) find the procedure workable?
- DeFi and NFTs: how to handle segments that fall outside the current scope?
Timeline
The Commission is now gathering data and input from regulators, market participants and consumer organizations. Any legislative proposals are not expected before 2027.
What does this mean for Dutch users?
In the short term, nothing changes. In the medium term, the rules on stablecoins and cross-border services may be refined — usually in favor of consumer protection.
