It may well be the most frequently asked question among beginning investors: should I buy Bitcoin or Ethereum? Both are the biggest names in crypto, but they do something very different. We calmly explain the differences so you can make a choice based on facts.

Bitcoin: digital gold

Bitcoin (BTC) is the first and best-known cryptocurrency. It was designed with one clear goal: a scarce, decentralized monetary system without a central bank. There will never be more than 21 million, and that makes Bitcoin a kind of digital gold for many investors — a long-term store of value.

Ethereum: the platform for apps

Ethereum (ETH) is more than money. It is a programmable platform on which developers build applications: from DeFi (financial services without a bank) to NFTs and stablecoins. ETH is the fuel that keeps that network running. Where Bitcoin mainly wants to preserve value, Ethereum wants to be the infrastructure of the new internet.

The differences at a glance

  • Purpose: Bitcoin = store of value; Ethereum = platform for applications.
  • Supply: Bitcoin is hard-capped at 21 million; Ethereum has no fixed maximum but does burn part of its coins.
  • Technology: Bitcoin deliberately keeps things simple and secure; Ethereum is more flexible and complex.
  • Risk and potential: Bitcoin is seen as the more established, ‘calmer’ choice; Ethereum depends more on the growth of its ecosystem.

What suits you?

The honest summary: it does not have to be either-or. Many investors hold both and thus spread their risk. If you mainly believe in crypto as a store of value, Bitcoin is the obvious choice. If you believe in the future of decentralized apps, Ethereum is interesting.
