‘Free crypto’ — it sounds too good to be true, and sometimes it is. Yet airdrops are a serious part of the crypto world. We explain what they are, why projects use them and how to take part safely without falling into a trap.

What is an airdrop?

An airdrop is the free distribution of tokens to users. New blockchain projects use it as marketing: by giving away coins, they attract users, create a community and ensure their token is in many hands right away. Sometimes you get an airdrop simply because you were already active on a particular network.

Why do projects hand out free tokens?

  • Awareness: an airdrop generates attention and new users.
  • Decentralization: by spreading tokens widely, not all power ends up with a small group.
  • Reward: early users are thanked for their trust, which fosters loyalty.

Some well-known projects handed out airdrops in the past that later turned out to be worth hundreds or even thousands of euros. That explains their popularity — but it is certainly no guarantee.

Beware: airdrops are a favorite target for scammers

Here comes the warning. Criminals use fake airdrops as bait. The most important rules to stay safe:

  • Never connect your wallet to an unknown site to ‘claim’ an airdrop — this is the most common form of theft.
  • Never share your seed phrase or private keys. A real airdrop never asks for that.
  • Distrust tokens that suddenly appear in your wallet. Sometimes those are ‘dusting’ attempts that lure you to a malicious site.
  • Use a separate wallet for airdrop hunting, separate from your main holdings.
