BitMEX shuts down after eleven years — BMEX token crashes 90%
Derivatives exchange BitMEX, cofounded by Arthur Hayes, is closing: the platform shuts down on 23 September 2026. Its own BMEX token lost around 90% within hours. Analysts read it as a sign of further consolidation in the exchange market.
One of the oldest names in crypto derivatives is disappearing. BitMEX, cofounded in 2014 by Arthur Hayes, announced on 23 July 2026 that the platform will close for good on 23 September 2026 — after eleven years.
BMEX token in free fall
The news hit its own exchange token immediately. BMEX collapsed from around 0.06 dollars (roughly €0.05) to barely 0.005 dollars (roughly €0.004) — a drop of about 90% (briefly heading toward −97%). The sell-off began roughly an hour before the official announcement.
From billion-dollar sale to orderly wind-down
In 2025, BitMEX explored a sale reportedly worth 1 billion dollars (roughly €875 million), but it fell through. Instead, the company chose an orderly wind-down. Users must withdraw their funds before 23 September; after that, a monthly maintenance fee of 50 dollars (roughly €44) looms.
‘An amazing ride’
Cofounder Arthur Hayes looked back briefly: ‘It was an amazing ride. We did something special together.’ BitMEX led the bitcoin-futures market for years, but saw its position eroded by larger rivals.
A sign of consolidation
Analysts read the closure mainly as a signal: the crypto exchange market is consolidating. Smaller and mid-sized venues are under pressure, while trading concentrates at the largest players. In Europe, MiCA adds heavy compliance requirements on top, increasing the pressure on smaller parties further.
What does it mean for you?
Still holding funds on BitMEX? Withdraw them in time — before 23 September — to avoid fees or hassle. And the bigger picture: prefer a regulated, well-capitalised exchange. A platform that looks big today can still pull the plug tomorrow.
