The cantonal bank of Ticino has taken cryptocurrency out of the separate-exchange-app corner. Since late July, BancaStato has offered trading and custody of digital assets directly within its existing web and mobile banking. Customers who already hold a payment account with the bank place their orders in the same environment where they check their balance.

What BancaStato is actually offering

The bank supports four assets: Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin and Solana. Orders are executed as market orders, without the customer having to open a second account at an exchange, set up a separate wallet or manage keys themselves. Custody sits with Sygnum, the Swiss bank holding a full banking authorisation for digital assets.

That sounds unspectacular, and that is precisely the point. The barrier for an ordinary bank customer is rarely the price of bitcoin; it is opening an account with a firm they do not know, going through a second identification process, and wondering what happens to their coins if that firm collapses.

Off the balance sheet — why that is the detail that matters

The announcement states that client assets are held off Sygnum's balance sheet under applicable legal and regulatory requirements. That is not a marketing line but the core of the structure. Assets held off the custodian's balance sheet are legally not the custodian's property. If the custodian fails, they sit outside the bankruptcy estate and are not collateral for its creditors.

That is exactly the distinction missing at the platforms that collapsed in 2022. Customers believed they owned their crypto; legally they were unsecured creditors of a company that had put their coins on its own balance sheet and lent them out.

The plumbing: Avaloq as SaaS

According to the parties involved, BancaStato is the first bank to take this service through Avaloq's SaaS environment, with a direct API connection to Sygnum. Avaloq is core banking software running across a large part of Swiss and European private banking.

That detail matters more than it sounds. It means the integration is not a bespoke project every bank has to rebuild, but a connection inside a platform dozens of other banks already run. What works at BancaStato is largely copy-work for the next Avaloq client.

Why Switzerland and not the EU

Switzerland sits outside the European Union, so MiCA does not apply there. Supervision rests with FINMA, within a framework that has explicitly accommodated digital assets since the DLT legislation of 2021. Cantonal banks are also a category of their own: rooted in their canton and, in many cases, carrying a state guarantee from it.

A bank with that profile putting crypto into its standard app says something different from a fintech doing the same. This is not an experiment at the edge of the system.

What you still do not know

Fees, spreads, minimum order sizes and whether more tokens will follow have not been disclosed. Nor is it clear whether the service is open to all client segments or initially to part of them. Anyone wanting to compare the cost against an ordinary exchange simply cannot do so right now.

What it means for you

If you live in the Netherlands or Belgium, there is nothing here for you today: BancaStato serves its own customer base. The pattern is relevant, though. Sygnum says it now runs infrastructure for more than 25 financial institutions, and states that more than a third of Switzerland's population has access to digital asset services through that route.

That is the direction of travel: not the customer walking to the exchange, but the exchange function walking into the bank. Dutch and Belgian banks are looking at the same vendors. The difference is that they have to do it under MiCA, with an authorisation as a CASP or through an existing banking authorisation.
