Crypto slips back on the escalation around Iran

A sixth day of US airstrikes on Iran and a near-closed Strait of Hormuz are pushing oil higher and dragging down risk assets. Bitcoin fell to ~63,130 dollars and ethereum lost 2.8%. This week's gains above 65,000 and 1,900 dollars evaporated fast.

The crypto market got the mirror image of last week's rally. Where a softer inflation print had lifted prices, escalating tension in the Middle East is now weighing them down. After a sixth day of US airstrikes on Iran and a near-closed Strait of Hormuz, oil prices climbed again and investors pulled back from risk assets. Bitcoin fell 1.4% to around 63,130 dollars (roughly €55,240), while ethereum lost 2.8% to roughly 1,832 dollars (roughly €1,603).

Oil and war: the risk that came true

Exactly what analysts warned about last week has now happened. Higher oil prices feed inflation fears, and that undermines hopes of rate cuts. Bitcoin's trip above 65,000 dollars (roughly €56,900) and ethereum's time over 1,900 dollars (roughly €1,660) were short-lived this week. As soon as the conflict flared up, sentiment turned.

Why crypto reacts so sharply

Crypto is still very much a risk-on asset. In times of geopolitical unrest, investors seek safety — government bonds, gold, the dollar — and sell their most speculative positions first. The fact that crypto swung from euphoria to caution within days shows how sensitive the market is right now to macro and news shocks.

What does it mean for Europe?

A sustained high oil price hits Europe twice over: costlier energy pushes up inflation, making the ECB more reluctant to cut rates. Still, not everything is in the red: over the full week ethereum is still +6.8%, and bitcoin slightly positive. So the drop is mainly a pullback after a strong week, not a collapse.

Caveat: one conflict, not a trend

Geopolitically driven price moves are inherently erratic and can reverse just as fast as the headlines. Anyone buying or selling on the back of a single escalation is trading on noise. This week's lesson is the same as last week's, only inverted: don't let a single headline dictate your strategy.
