Bitcoin opened on Tuesday 11 August at 63,912.50 dollars, roughly 55,923 euro, which is 1.4 percent below Monday's open. Ethereum started at 1,871.33 dollars, roughly 1,638 euro, down 2 percent. Both edged up during the morning, to 64,282.28 dollars and 1,888.83 dollars, roughly 56,247 and 1,653 euro.

Why an American number matters here

Two US inflation reports are due later this week; the consumer price index is on the calendar for 12 August. That figure drives expectations about what the Federal Reserve does with rates, and those expectations drive the dollar and investors' appetite for risk.

For anyone investing in euro there is a second layer. Bitcoin trades in dollars worldwide, so your return in euro is the price plus the exchange rate. A day on which bitcoin barely moves in dollars while the euro strengthens can show up as a loss in your overview. That is not a bug in the app.

One day is not a trend

A move of one to two percent is ordinary noise for bitcoin. Anyone hoping to read something into it should look at the weeks around it and at what is structurally changing, not at a Tuesday opening price. We publish these figures because they are factual, not because they predict anything.

What you can actually do with it

If you plan to buy or sell around a scheduled figure, know that spreads widen at those moments and that market orders fill worse than you are used to. A limit order costs nothing extra and protects you against exactly that. Beyond that, look at what a purchase costs at your platform: on an order of a few hundred euro the difference in fees between platforms usually outweighs a percent of price movement.
