Brazil puts a 24-hour hold on large crypto transfers

From 1 January 2027 Brazil's central bank will hold transfers above 10,000 dollars, roughly 8,750 euro, for a full day when they go to a self-custody wallet or a foreign provider.

Brazil's central bank has introduced a 24-hour waiting period on large crypto transfers through Resolution 584. The measure takes effect on 1 January 2027 and covers transfers above 10,000 dollars, roughly 8,750 euro, or where a customer's daily total passes that amount. The delay applies only when the money goes to a self-custody wallet or to a provider outside Brazil.

What exactly it covers

The rule applies to banks, payment institutions and crypto service providers, and covers both ordinary cryptocurrencies and fiat-backed stablecoins. Smaller transfers flagged by a provider's own risk controls must be held as well. A provider may release such a transfer early, but only after a documented review.

The central bank explicitly calls it a precautionary measure: the point is to give providers time to assess fraud risk, not to block traffic. If firms fail to comply, the supervisor can impose stricter requirements such as longer holds or wider transaction monitoring.

How Europe does it differently

The EU has no waiting period. What it does have, since the end of 2024, is the transfer of funds regulation: when more than 1,000 euro goes to a self-hosted wallet, the provider must establish whether the customer actually controls that wallet. That is an identity check up front, not a delay afterwards.

The difference is one of principle. Brazil buys time to intervene; the EU demands proof of who is on the other side. To a user the Brazilian model feels heavier: your money sits still for a day even when nothing is wrong.

Why it still matters here

Anyone living in Europe will notice nothing, unless they deal with a Brazilian provider. The reason to follow it is the direction of travel: Brazil is one of the largest crypto markets in the world, and holds on outgoing traffic to self-custody are an instrument other supervisors will watch succeed or fail. What happens there tends to come up here later.
