MineShop launches HashStrike: rent bitcoin hashrate by the day
MineShop's HashStrike rents out SHA-256 hashrate from 1 PH/s per day at 55 sats per TH/s. What it costs, what it earns and how to rent out your own miner.
MineShop has added a second branch: HashStrike, a rental platform for bitcoin hashrate at hashstrike.mineshop.eu. You rent SHA-256 computing power for 1 to 30 days, starting at 1 PH/s, and pay with a single bitcoin invoice. On 28 September the market price stood at 55 sats per TH/s per day. If you own a miner, you can rent it out on the same site.
What is HashStrike?
HashStrike is a rental market for bitcoin hashrate run by Mining Hardware Limited, the Irish company behind the MineShop.eu web store. You do not buy a miner; you temporarily buy the work of other people's miners, and you decide which pool that work goes to. That can be HashStrike's solo pool, a regular pool, or your own pool.
There are two sides:
- Renting. You choose capacity and duration, pay, and follow delivery on your own tracking page.
- Renting out. You connect your own miner to the marketplace through a proxy and receive sats whenever someone rents it.
Only SHA-256 is offered, so only bitcoin hardware. Scrypt for litecoin and dogecoin is not included.
What does renting cost?
HashStrike charges in satoshis per TH/s per day. On 28 September the site listed two rates:
The minimum is 1 PH/s (1,000 TH/s) for one day, the maximum 50 PH/s for 30 days. Converted at the market rate:
With the code CRYPTOCODES you get 3% off a rental order. At the market rate you then pay 53.35 sats per TH/s per day, or 53,350 sats for 1 PH/s for one day. That percentage comes from MineShop's affiliate programme; the order form has no coupon field, so check the amount before you pay.
Payment is on-chain in bitcoin only, via BTCPay Server. You need no account to rent, there is no card payment, and HashStrike holds no balance for you. According to the terms of 7 September, nothing is added on top of the amount shown before payment.
What if less hashrate arrives?
HashStrike measures delivery from the stratum connection itself: PH-hours delivered against PH-hours promised. If the final result falls short, the difference is automatically converted into Strike Credit, a sats balance pro rata to what was missing.
The downside is in the same terms: Strike Credit is not a refund. You can only use it for a next rental at HashStrike and cannot convert it into bitcoin. So you do not get money back to your own address.
Does renting pay off?
On average, no, and you can check that yourself. The revenue per TH/s per day is called the hashprice. Over the last 144 blocks up to 28 September, miners together earned 452.01 BTC (block subsidy plus transaction fees), at a network hashrate of about 951 EH/s according to mempool.space. That works out at around 47.5 sats per TH/s per day.
The market rate of 55 sats is 16% above that, Priority 28%. Anyone renting therefore pays more than the hashrate earns on average at that moment. For every 100 sats of rent, you can expect around 86 sats back in the long run, before pool fees. With 3% off via CRYPTOCODES it becomes 53.35 sats, still 12% above the hashprice; then around 89 of every 100 sats come back. That is not unique to HashStrike: on rental markets the price is usually above the hashprice, because sellers pass on their electricity and risk.
Solo: the chance of a whole block
If you send rented hashrate to a solo pool, you do not get a small daily amount but a small chance of a complete block, currently just over 3.1 BTC. With the same network hashrate of 951 EH/s:
With the largest order you pay 0.825 BTC for a one-in-five chance of just over 3.1 BTC. Four times out of five it yields nothing, and Strike Credit does not cover that: HashStrike promises delivered hashrate, not blocks. The network hashrate fluctuates daily, so these odds are a snapshot.
The marketplace: renting out your own miner
The marketplace at hashstrike.mineshop.eu/marketplace is the other side of the same system. You create a free account, enter a bitcoin address and change one stratum setting on your miner, to stratum+tcp://hashstrike.mineshop.eu:3340. HashStrike then measures your rig's real hashrate, after which your offer goes live at the price you choose.
When your rig is rented, the proxy automatically sends its work to the renter's pool for that period. Where it mines while nobody is renting is not described precisely on the site; ask if you want to keep using your own pool. Payment is held in escrow and paid out in sats afterwards, based on measured delivery. Listing is free; HashStrike deducts a marketplace fee at settlement. How high that fee is, is not stated anywhere on the site or in the terms. Ask before you list a rig.
On 28 September there were three verified rigs on the marketplace, 21.2 TH/s in total:
Those asking prices are 3 to 9 times the market rate of 55 sats and far above the hashprice of 47.5 sats. Whether they are actually rented at that price, the site does not show. For comparison: a 10 TH/s rig currently earns around 475 sats a day in a regular pool, before electricity.
Renting and pointing it at your own pool
With a rental order you can enter your own stratum URL. HashStrike Solo is filled in by default, stratum+tcp://solo.mineshop.eu:3335, with your bitcoin address as the worker name. The fee of that solo pool is not stated on the HashStrike page.
Another destination is the CryptoCode solo pool, open since 26 September. It has a separate port for rented hashrate: stratum+tcp://pool.cryptocodes.eu:3338, with your own BTC address as the username and a 1% pool fee. That port starts at a high difficulty, exactly what an order of 1 PH/s or more needs. We have our own stake in it, so read the explanation of how the pool works and do the maths yourself.
Who is HashStrike not suitable for?
- Anyone looking for a predictable return. Renting costs more on average than it earns.
- Anyone expecting money back after a failed delivery: that becomes Strike Credit, not bitcoin.
- Anyone who wants to mine litecoin, dogecoin or another algorithm. SHA-256 only.
- Anyone who wants to start small: the minimum is 1 PH/s for one day, about 55,000 sats.
MineShop itself: coupon CRYPTOCODES
The code CRYPTOCODES gives 3% off all three parts: the store with ASIC miners, from an ESP32 solo miner to WhatsMiner and Antminer, rentals at HashStrike, and the marketplace. We tested it in the store on 28 September: €2.25 off a Bitaxe Gamma 601 of €74.87. HashStrike's order form has no coupon field; that the 3% applies there too comes from MineShop's affiliate programme and we could not test it ourselves. Check that the discount is included before you pay. The store's terms and return rules are on our MineShop page.
Disclosure: the links to HashStrike, the marketplace and MineShop are affiliate links. If you rent or buy through such a link, CryptoCode receives a commission. It does not cost you more.
Frequently asked questions
Is renting hashrate profitable?
On average, no. On 28 September HashStrike's market rate was 55 sats per TH/s per day, while one TH/s earned about 47.5 sats at that moment. Even with 3% off via CRYPTOCODES (53.35 sats), you pay more than you get back on average. Profit depends on luck when solo mining or on a rising bitcoin price.
What is the minimum at HashStrike?
1 PH/s for one day. At the market rate that is 55,000 sats. The maximum is 50 PH/s for 30 days.
Do I get my money back if the hashrate is not delivered?
Not in bitcoin. The shortfall automatically becomes Strike Credit, a balance you can only use for a next rental at HashStrike.
Can I rent out my Bitaxe or home miner?
The marketplace accepts any SHA-256 miner you connect through the proxy; HashStrike states no minimum. The smallest rig on 28 September was 3.1 TH/s. How much fee HashStrike deducts is not on the site.
Which pool should I use for rented hashrate?
Any pool with a stratum URL. HashStrike fills in its own solo pool by default. You can also enter a regular pool, or rental port 3338 of the CryptoCode solo pool.
Does the code CRYPTOCODES work on HashStrike too?
According to MineShop's affiliate programme, CRYPTOCODES gives 3% off in the store, on rentals at HashStrike and on the marketplace. We tested it in the store; HashStrike's order form has no coupon field, so check before paying that the discount is included in the amount.
Is this an investment product?
No. You buy computing power for a set period. There is no guaranteed return, and HashStrike itself writes that it promises delivered hashrate, not blocks.
