Solo mining pool: bitcoin, bitcoin cash and dogecoin

We are building a solo pool. You mine on your own odds: find a block and the entire block reward is yours. Find none and the day pays nothing. The nodes are running test runs and there is no start date yet.

Nodes are up

The full nodes for all three chains are running and synced. Test runs are going through them now.

No date yet

No start date has been announced. It follows once the tests come back clean.

Three chains

Bitcoin, bitcoin cash and dogecoin. No other coins are planned for now.

What is a solo pool?

In an ordinary pool, thousands of miners combine their hashrate. When the pool finds a block, the reward goes out in proportion to the work each miner contributed. You earn a small, fairly predictable amount almost every day.

In a solo pool you share nothing. The pool supplies the infrastructure only: a node that hands you work, tracks your shares and broadcasts your block the moment you find one. The full block reward plus the transaction fees in that block then go to your address. Find no block and the return is zero. That is not a detail but the whole difference: you trade a small fixed amount for a small chance at a large one.

The three chains

We start with three chains and are not adding more for now. Bitcoin and bitcoin cash both run on SHA-256, so the same ASIC works on either. Dogecoin runs on Scrypt and needs different hardware.

ChainAlgorithmBlock timeBlock reward
Bitcoin (BTC)SHA-25610 min3,125 BTC
Bitcoin Cash (BCH)SHA-25610 min3,125 BCH
Dogecoin (DOGE)Scrypt1 min10.000 DOGE

These figures come from the protocols themselves. Bitcoin and bitcoin cash both halve around April 2028; the dogecoin reward has been fixed at 10,000 per block since 2015 and no longer halves. Transaction fees in a block come on top and differ per block. Network hashrate and prices are deliberately absent from this table: they change daily.

How large are your odds?

Work it out yourself, because this is the number that matters. Your chance per block is your own hashrate divided by the hashrate of the entire network. For the expected waiting time:

expected time to a block = network hashrate ÷ your hashrate × block time

A home miner of a few TH/s against a network measured in exahashes lands on an expected wait of many thousands of years. That is no reason not to do it — small miners have found blocks — but it is the reason not to treat it as income. Fill in the current network hashrate yourself; we will not print a number here that stops being true tomorrow. Dogecoin sits differently thanks to its shorter block time and lower network hashrate.

Who this suits and who it does not

Go ahead if
  • You own a Bitaxe, NerdQaxe or similar small miner and want to run the odds yourself
  • Your hardware is running anyway, for the heat for instance
  • You want to see a block found and broadcast, not just a balance ticking up
  • You can go months or years without a payout and not mind
Better not if
  • You need the return to pay the electricity bill
  • You want a predictable monthly amount — pick a shared pool instead
  • You are buying hardware specifically for this and counting on earning it back
  • You expect a bigger miner to make the outcome certain; it only shortens the expected wait

What we are not saying yet

Nodes in testing means nodes in testing. None of this is settled, and it goes on this page as soon as it is:

  • The pool fee
  • The stratum addresses and ports
  • The minimum payout and how payouts are made
  • The start date

An empty line beats a number we have to take back later. Anyone on the waiting list hears it first.

Waiting list

Leave your email address and you get one message the moment the pool opens, plus the specifications once they are settled. No newsletter, no mailings in between.

We use your address for this only and pass it to no one. One reply to the email unsubscribes you.

Frequently asked questions

When does the pool open?

There is no date yet. The nodes for the three chains are running test runs; we name a date once those come back clean. Anyone on the waiting list gets word.

What will it cost?

The pool fee is not settled. We would rather not name a percentage we have to adjust later; once it is fixed it goes on this page and out to the waiting list.

What happens if I find a block?

The full block reward plus the transaction fees in that block go to your address, minus the pool fee. For bitcoin that is currently 3.125 BTC, for bitcoin cash 3.125 BCH and for dogecoin 10,000 DOGE.

Can I join with a Bitaxe?

Yes. Any miner that speaks stratum can take part, from a single Bitaxe to a rack of ASICs. Dogecoin needs Scrypt hardware; a SHA-256 miner will not work there.

Does solo mining earn more than an ordinary pool?

Over the long run the expected return is roughly the same; the difference is in the spread. A shared pool often pays a small amount, a solo pool almost never pays a large one. Budget for zero and treat a found block as a windfall.

Why these three coins?

Bitcoin and bitcoin cash share an algorithm, so the same hardware works on both. Dogecoin adds a second algorithm with a shorter block time, which shortens the expected wait for small miners. More chains are not planned for now.

This page is an announcement, not an offer. There is no service to sign up for yet and nothing is being charged. Mining carries no guaranteed return, and the electricity costs run whether you find a block or not.
